Cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure that, in the UK, you usually undergo as a private patient. As a result, you are able to pick and choose your plastic surgeon. Although that can be a good thing in many ways, it can also become very confusing and you may be concerned that you’re making the wrong decision.
Recommendations from friends or family can be a wonderful way to find a practitioner, but many people are reluctant to let on they’ve undergone surgery. Also, unless you are planning to undergo exactly the same procedure then their situation will be very different to yours, particularly as some surgeons specialise in specific procedures.
Maybe you’ve searched on the internet for plastic surgeons that offer the kind of procedure you’re interested in and you’ve got a number of results in your local area.
So, how do you check whether your cosmetic surgeon is right for the job?
First step, can often be to speak to your GP. As well as being very aware of your medical history, they should also know the consultant plastic surgeons in the local area and be able to recommend who they think will be best for you.
What qualifications should I look for?
Cosmetic surgery is not a set qualification and therefore you find many doctors call themselves cosmetic or aesthetic surgeons. The first step is to check their qualifications on the General Medical Council (GMC). What you should look for is a surgeon that has gained the qualification FRCS (Plast) and is on the GMC’s specialist register in the plastic surgery section. You can also see if they hold, or have held, a consultant-level position in this speciality in the NHS.
Just Cosmetic Surgery’s Mr Alan Park is a plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon who has a busy private and NHS practice. He is also a Paediatric Plastic Surgeon and treats children with hypospadias.
Membership of the leading independent plastic surgery organisations is also a good indication. Leamington plastic surgeon Mr Alan Park is a member of both the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
The importance of the cosmetic surgery consultation
As well as ascertaining that their qualifications and experience is in order, it is crucial that your cosmetic surgeon is someone you feel you can trust and communicate with. At your Just Cosmetic Surgery consultation with Mr Alan Park at his Leamington clinic, you’ll have plenty of time to be able to explain exactly what you’re hoping to achieve from your procedure and he’ll be able to assess whether your expectations are realistic.
